Barbie Girl Song Facts

Here are the interesting Barbie Girl Song Facts

Barbie Girl Song Facts – The song that was popularized by Aqua in the 90s until the early 2000s has these interesting pieces of information.

The group was composed of Scandinavian musicians and DJs who had originally formed under the name Joyspeed. Their hit song was created after the group saw an exhibit on “Kitsch Culture.” The song, which was released in 1997, used “Barbie” which is a popular doll under the company Mattel.

Based on the article in Songfacts, Mattel sued Aqua for using Barbie in their song. They were not the first group sued by Mattel over Barbie. It is because the company also sued Director Todd Haynes for his use of the doll in the 1987 film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story.

However, the group reasoned out that Mattel just injected their own meanings into the song’s lyrics. A judge ruled the song was protected as free speech in 2002.

Because of that, the song and the band garnered loads of media attention. However, for Blender magazine, this song is the 33rd worst song ever which was stated in the 2004 article “Run for Your Life! It’s the 50 Worst Songs Ever!”

Aqua teamed up with DJ Tiësto to record the first-ever remix of Barbie Girl and this came along with a lyric video. It was Tiësto’s daughter who was the inspiration behind the remix because she loved the original song. The remix was released on June 9, 2023, in line with the song’s 25th anniversary.

The Barbie film trailer also features the song’s chorus and the resurgence happened. Fans of Aqua were expecting that the song would be included in the official soundtrack of the 2023 Barbie film. However, because of the past issue between Mattel and Aqua, this did not happen.

The official soundtrack was Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s Barbie World. A week after of the movie’s release, Barbie Girl entered the UK Singles chart Top 40.
