The Amityville Horror: Terrifying Facts About This Horror Film

Here are the terrifying facts about The Amityville Horror

The Amityville Horror is one of the most popular classic horror films and this came with terrifying facts that will surely shock you.

The movie revolved around the story of George and Kathy Lutz who bought what should have been their dream home in 1975. It was in Dutch Colonial in Amityville, Long Island. They were able to purchase the house for a great deal because of its tragic past.

Two years later, writer Jay Anson released The Amityville Horror. It was supposedly the true account of the monthlong supernatural events the Lutz family experienced after moving into the home at 112 Ocean Avenue, based on the article in Mental Floss.

The book received an overwhelming success and two years later, a film was released starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder. The movie was also a success.

Although the story was sort of based on the true story, the haunting might be made up. The Lutz family maintained that their story was true apart from some Hollywood embellishments. However, when attorney William Weber who previously worked with them on potentially selling their story, said in an interview that what the family told author Jay Anson was “a hoax.” “We created this story over several bottles of wine,” the lawyer said.

The movie was not filmed at the real house and lead actress Margot Kidder couldn’t stop laughing while filming. She and her onscreen partner James Brolin did not believe that the horror story was true. Kidder and Brolin did not get along all the time on the set. They were told to pretend that the set was cursed to help with the movie.

“I watched with great amusement as the studio’s publicity machine went into action concocting these terrible things that were happening on set, which weren’t really,” Kiddler said.

The flies swarming Rod Steiger who played the priest, Father Delaney, in the movie were real. Sugar and beer were squirted on his face in order to make that scene as realistic as possible.
