70s Swedish pop group ABBA popularized Dancing Queen which is an iconic song until today and has become a go-to karaoke track by many people.

ABBA members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson wrote this dance song with the working title “Boogaloo.” It was inspired by the 1974 George McCrae disco hit “Rock Your Baby” and the drum beats were from the 1972 album Gumbo by Dr. John.

ABBA’s manager Stig Anderson was the one who thought of the title that is known today. One of the iconic performances of this was when the group sang it on June 18, 1976, at a televised tribute to Queen Silvia and King Gustaf XVI of Sweden. The next day the royal couple got married.

Dancing Queen is one of ABBA’s 14 US Top 40 hits to make it to #1. This is featured in Muriel’s Wedding, a hit Australian movie starring Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths, along with other songs of the group.

It gained worldwide popularity and became a hit song in other countries such as Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Rhodesia, South Africa, and West Germany. Several well-known artists have performed this song. One of them was the bad U2. They covered this song during their Zoo TV tour in 1992.

The band was joined by Bjorn and Benny during their show in Stockholm. Carol Douglas, an American disco singer, covered this song in 1977 and because of this, the song was #110 in America. The most recent covers were done by A*Teens in 2000 and the Glee Cast in 2011.

BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans shared that when this song was played at a Windsor Castle event, Queen Elizabeth said that every time Dancing Queen plays on, she tries to dance because she is the queen.
