Cholesterol is something that makes a lot of people afraid when it comes to their health. It is known by many that cholesterol is harmful to the body, especially to the heart. However, there are foods that are a source of cholesterol that are good for the body.
What is a healthy cholesterol level by age? A total cholesterol level of less than 200 mg/dL (5.17 mmol/L) is considered normal. Reaching the level of 240 mg/dL (6.21 mmol/L) is already considered bad for your health.
Based on the article in The Healthy, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and healthy fats, like olive oil are good sources of healthy cholesterol. You can also add fish and seafood to your diet around twice a week.
On the other hand, other protein sources like eggs, poultry, and dairy should be in moderation. Red meat should eaten “sparingly.” Research showed that eating red meat regularly increases cardiovascular disease risk by 22% on average.
Combining one or two sources is also a good option. You can start your diet by joining “Monounsaturated fats” that are found in avocados, olive oil, and seeds, and polyunsaturated fats, present in walnuts, flaxseeds, and fish.
Norman E. Lepor, MD, FACC, FAHA, FSCAI, an attending cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and a professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California in Los Angeles, does not recommend the “keto diet” which gained popularity among health buffs and celebrities.
